Photography Highlights

Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival, Passo Rolle & Baita Segantini

We meet at Venice Marco Polo Airport (or near Venice) and begin our journey into the heart of the Italian Dolomites. After leaving Venice, we drive north towards the mountains and Passo Rolle, with photography stops along the way depending on timing and conditions. In the afternoon, we reach Baita Segantini, one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the Dolomites, overlooking the dramatic Pale di San Martino. Here we photograph the changing mountain light and stay for sunset, weather permitting — the perfect introduction to our Dolomites photography tour. After the photography session, we continue towards the Val di Fiemme and Carezza region, where we spend the night.

Overnight stay: Val di Fiemme / Carezza area.

Day 2 — Lago di Carezza & Alpe di Siusi

We start before sunrise at Lago di Carezza (Karersee), photographing the first morning light beneath the dramatic peaks of the Latemar and the reflections on the alpine lake. After our sunrise photography session, we continue towards Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm), the largest high-altitude alpine meadow in Europe and one of the most iconic landscape photography locations in the Dolomites. We spend the afternoon exploring the area and searching for the best compositions before photographing sunset over the surrounding peaks and rolling alpine meadows. A classic day of our Dolomites photography tour, combining two very different mountain landscapes and light conditions.

Overnight stay: Alpe di Siusi area.

Day 3 — Alpe di Siusi, Seceda & Val di Funes

Our first photography session takes place at Alpe di Siusi, where we return to the plateau in time to capture the first light over its rolling alpine meadows and surrounding Dolomite peaks.

Following sunrise, we travel towards Ortisei, where, subject to cable car operations and weather conditions, we ascend to Seceda for a photography session overlooking its spectacular ridgeline and the surrounding mountain landscape.

In the afternoon, we continue to Val di Funes (Villnöss), one of the most iconic landscape photography locations in the Italian Dolomites.

Here, we explore different compositions before photographing the Odle mountain group at sunset, when the last light can illuminate the dramatic peaks rising above the valley.

After sunset, we continue towards San Vigilio di Marebbe, where we spend the night, strategically positioned for an early departure to photograph sunrise at Passo delle Erbe the following morning.

Overnight stay: San Vigilio di Marebbe area.

Day 4 — Passo delle Erbe, Perca & Dobbiaco

We begin the day with an early departure towards Passo delle Erbe (Würzjoch), where our sunrise photography session focuses on the impressive Sass de Putia (Peitlerkofel) and the surrounding alpine landscape.

As the first light reaches the mountain peaks, we explore different compositions, capturing the contrast between dramatic rock formations, alpine meadows and the warm colors of autumn.

After our morning session, we continue towards Perca, with opportunities for photography stops along the way depending on light and weather conditions.

In the afternoon, we travel towards Dobbiaco (Toblach), exploring the surrounding landscapes, including Lago di Dobbiaco, if conditions allow. The lake offers beautiful opportunities for reflections, autumn colors and intimate landscape compositions, particularly when the surrounding mountains are reflected in its calm waters.

The day concludes with a transfer to the San Candido area, where we spend the night, ready for another early start the following morning.

Overnight stay: San Candido area.

Day 5 — Lago di Braies, Riva Waterfalls & Misurina

The still waters of Lago di Braies (Pragser Wildsee) provide the perfect setting for our sunrise photography session. Surrounded by towering mountain peaks and autumn forests, this iconic alpine lake offers beautiful opportunities to capture reflections, intimate landscapes and the soft colors of the early morning.

Leaving the lake behind, we make our way towards the Riva Waterfalls (Cascate di Riva), a series of impressive waterfalls nestled in a forested valley near Campo Tures. Here, we take time to experiment with long exposures, flowing water and woodland compositions.

Later in the day, our journey takes us towards the spectacular landscapes of Lago di Misurina and Lago d’Antorno, surrounded by some of the most recognizable peaks of the Dolomites, including the dramatic Cadini di Misurina.

As the afternoon light begins to fade, we explore carefully selected viewpoints for our sunset photography session, taking advantage of the changing light, mountain reflections and atmospheric conditions.

Following sunset, we continue towards Auronzo di Cadore, where we spend the night.

Overnight stay: Auronzo di Cadore area.

Day 6 — Lago d’Antorno & Tre Cime di Lavaredo

A peaceful alpine atmosphere awaits us at Lago d’Antorno, where we photograph the first light of the day illuminating the surrounding Dolomite peaks. The lake’s calm waters, mountain reflections and autumn colors provide wonderful opportunities for both wide-angle landscapes and more intimate compositions.

After our sunrise session, we enjoy a relaxed morning, allowing time to rest and recharge before one of the most anticipated photographic experiences of the tour.

In the afternoon, weather and road access permitting, we head towards the magnificent Tre Cime di Lavaredo (Drei Zinnen), one of the most spectacular and recognizable mountain landscapes in the Italian Dolomites.

Surrounded by towering rock formations and breathtaking alpine scenery, we explore different viewpoints and compositions, making the most of the changing afternoon light. If access restrictions prevent us from reaching the upper viewpoints, we will explore alternative photographic locations in the surrounding area.

Our photography session continues until sunset, when the dramatic silhouettes of the Tre Cime create an unforgettable setting for landscape photography.

After sunset, we return to Auronzo di Cadore for another overnight stay.

Overnight stay: Auronzo di Cadore area.

Day 7 — Lago di Auronzo, Cortina d’Ampezzo & Alpine Exploration

After several days of early starts and unforgettable mountain scenery, we enjoy a slower morning near Lago di Auronzo, taking time to relax and appreciate the peaceful atmosphere of the surrounding landscape.

Our journey then continues towards Cortina d’Ampezzo, famously known as the Queen of the Dolomites, a charming alpine town surrounded by some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the region.

The afternoon offers the opportunity to explore one of several remarkable locations, with our choice guided by weather, trail conditions and the photographic opportunities available.

Depending on the conditions, we may hike to the stunning Lago di Sorapiss (Lake Sorapis), renowned for its extraordinary turquoise waters and dramatic mountain backdrop, or explore the beautiful Cascate di Fanes (Fanes Waterfalls), where flowing water, autumn forests and rugged alpine landscapes provide excellent opportunities for long-exposure photography and intimate compositions.

As some mountain trails may be affected by early snowfall or icy conditions in October, the final location will be selected with safety and photographic opportunities in mind. Alternative locations around Cortina d’Ampezzo may be explored if necessary.

In the evening, we travel towards Borca di Cadore, where we spend the night.

Overnight stay: Borca di Cadore area.

Day 8 — Lago Federa, Croda da Lago & Passo Giau

Deep in the heart of the Dolomites, Lago Federa offers one of the most enchanting autumn landscapes of our photographic journey. An early morning private 4×4 transfer brings us closer to this beautiful alpine lake, nestled beneath the dramatic cliffs of Croda da Lago. Depending on access and trail conditions, a short walk may be required to reach the lake.

In the soft morning light, golden larch trees, rugged mountain peaks and potential reflections on the water offer extraordinary opportunities for autumn landscape photography. We take our time exploring different perspectives, capturing both the grand scenery and the delicate details of the autumn landscape.

Following our morning photography session, we return using our arranged transfer and enjoy some well-deserved time to rest before heading towards another spectacular location.

Later in the afternoon, we travel to Passo Giau, one of the most scenic mountain passes in the Dolomites, famous for its sweeping alpine views and the distinctive silhouette of Ra Gusela.

Here, we dedicate the final hours of daylight to photographing the surrounding peaks, searching for the best compositions as the warm evening light transforms the mountain landscape.

After sunset, we settle into our accommodation in the Passo Giau / Passo Falzarego area.

Overnight stay: Passo Giau / Passo Falzarego area.

Day 9 — Cinque Torri, Passo Falzarego & Lago di Limides

The extraordinary rock formations of Cinque Torri take center stage as we head out for another memorable sunrise photography session. Rising dramatically above the surrounding alpine landscape, these iconic towers offer endless possibilities for creative compositions, especially as the first morning light reaches their rugged limestone faces.

With the changing light, we explore different viewpoints, combining dramatic mountain scenery with the textures and colors of the autumn landscape.

Following our morning session, we have the flexibility to explore additional photographic locations in the area, including a hidden waterfall tucked away in the Dolomites. This lesser-known location offers a more intimate photography experience, with opportunities to capture flowing water, natural textures and delicate woodland details away from the region’s more famous landmarks.

Later in the afternoon, we may continue towards Passo Falzarego and Lago di Limides, depending on weather conditions, available daylight and photographic opportunities. Alternatively, we may dedicate more time to the waterfall and its surroundings.

As Lago di Limides is a seasonal alpine lake, it may have little or no water during autumn. Even when the lake is dry, the surrounding landscape offers rewarding photographic opportunities, with rugged mountain backdrops, autumn colors and scenic viewpoints.

Our final photography session will focus on making the most of the evening light, whether among the spectacular peaks of Passo Falzarego or at another carefully selected location nearby.

Overnight stay: Passo Falzarego / Passo Giau area.

Day 10 — Passo Giau Sunrise & Departure

One last sunrise in the heart of the Dolomites marks the perfect conclusion to our photographic journey.

We return to Passo Giau for our final photography session, surrounded by spectacular mountain peaks and sweeping alpine landscapes. As the first light illuminates the dramatic silhouette of Ra Gusela and the surrounding mountains, we enjoy one last opportunity to capture the beauty and atmosphere of the Dolomites.

After our sunrise session, we return to our accommodation for breakfast, collect our belongings and prepare for departure.

We then begin our scenic journey back to Venice, with a private transfer to Venice Marco Polo Airport included in the tour. Arrival time will depend on road and weather conditions, so we recommend booking return flights for the late afternoon or evening.

With cameras full of memories and unforgettable moments from ten days exploring the Italian Alps, our Dolomites Photography Tour comes to an end.

End of tour — Drop-off at Venice Marco Polo Airport.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Our Dolomites Autumn Photography Tour is designed for photographers of different experience levels, from enthusiastic beginners to experienced landscape photographers. Throughout the journey, you’ll receive personalized guidance on camera settings, composition, exposure and creative landscape photography techniques. With a small group of no more than six participants, there is plenty of time for individual attention and questions. You don’t need professional camera equipment or advanced technical knowledge to enjoy the experience. A passion for photography, nature and exploring the mountains is what matters most.

Our Dolomites photography tour combines easy walks, moderate hikes and a few more demanding mountain trails. Some photography locations require walking uphill, navigating uneven terrain or spending time outdoors in cold conditions, particularly during sunrise and sunset sessions. A reasonable level of fitness and comfortable hiking experience are recommended. Where practical, less demanding alternatives may be available, depending on the location and daily itinerary. If you have concerns about your fitness or mobility, please contact us before booking so we can discuss the planned activities and their suitability.

For landscape photography in the Dolomites, we recommend a DSLR or mirrorless camera, a wide-angle lens for dramatic mountain scenery and a telephoto lens for capturing distant peaks, details and compressed perspectives. A sturdy tripod is particularly useful for sunrise, sunset, blue hour and long-exposure photography. Spare batteries, memory cards, a lens-cleaning kit and a weather-resistant camera bag are also recommended. Polarizing and neutral-density filters can be useful but are not essential. You don’t need the latest professional equipment to participate, and we’ll be happy to advise you on what to bring before the tour.

October is one of the most rewarding seasons for landscape photography in the Italian Dolomites. Golden larch forests, colourful alpine landscapes, atmospheric morning mist and the possibility of early snowfall create exceptional photographic opportunities. Autumn also brings softer light and beautiful contrasts between warm foliage and dramatic mountain peaks. However, weather conditions can change quickly, especially at higher elevations, and temperatures may drop below freezing around sunrise. Warm layers, waterproof clothing and proper hiking boots are essential. Our autumn photography itinerary is designed to take advantage of seasonal colours and changing conditions while remaining flexible when necessary.

Yes. Sunrise and sunset photography are among the highlights of our Dolomites Autumn Photography Tour. The itinerary is carefully planned around the most promising natural light, with photography sessions at locations such as Alpe di Siusi, Lago di Braies, Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Cinque Torri and Passo Giau. We’ll explore opportunities to photograph golden-hour light, dramatic clouds, mountain reflections and atmospheric autumn landscapes. Some days may also offer blue-hour photography or misty morning scenes. Exact locations and schedules may change depending on weather, seasonal access and safety conditions, as the quality of light and photographic opportunities cannot be guaranteed.

Yes. Our Dolomites Autumn Photography Tour includes group transportation during the scheduled itinerary, beginning with the planned pick-up in Venice and concluding with the return transfer to Venice. We travel together between photography locations in a passenger vehicle, allowing the group to focus on photography rather than driving and navigation. Some mountain locations may require walking or authorized local transport, including mountain taxis where applicable. Please refer to the Price & Details section for the exact transportation arrangements, inclusions and exclusions. International flights and personal travel arrangements to Venice are not included unless expressly stated otherwise.

Mountain weather and seasonal access restrictions are important considerations when planning an autumn photography tour in the Dolomites. Certain locations, including high-altitude roads and trails around Tre Cime di Lavaredo, may become inaccessible because of snow, adverse weather, seasonal closures or local regulations. If a planned location cannot be reached safely, we’ll adapt the itinerary and seek suitable alternative photography opportunities whenever possible. The Dolomites offer an extraordinary variety of landscapes, from alpine lakes and golden forests to dramatic peaks and mountain passes. Our priority is to make the most of the available conditions while maintaining a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. Access to specific locations cannot be guaranteed.
