Iceland Photo Tour — Overview

Photography in Iceland is not about ticking locations.

It’s about being in the right place when everything comes together — light, weather, and moment.

This Iceland photography tour and workshop follows a carefully planned route across the country’s most photogenic areas, including waterfalls, glaciers, black sand beaches and remote landscapes.

Each day is adapted to the conditions, adjusting timing and locations to make the most of the light — without rushing. Throughout the journey, dedicated photography guidance in the field helps participants work with composition, camera settings, long exposures, night photography and the constantly changing Icelandic light.

Designed for photographers who want to explore Iceland through their cameras, this journey combines hands-on guidance, Northern Lights photography opportunities and the freedom to work with the landscape at its best.

Small group. Maximum attention. Real experience.

Itinerary

Day 1 — Snæfellsnes, Búðir Black Church & Kirkjufell Sunset

Our Iceland photography tour begins near Keflavík, where we meet before setting off for the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Known for its volcanic mountains, rugged coastline and wide-open landscapes, this part of western Iceland is a fitting introduction to the days ahead.

Our first stop is Búðakirkja, the small black church at Búðir. Its simple silhouette stands against a backdrop of mountains and lava fields, making it an interesting subject for minimalist compositions, especially under Iceland’s often changing skies.

We then continue towards Grundarfjörður and Kirkjufell, one of Iceland’s most recognisable mountains. For our first sunset session, we explore the area around Kirkjufellsfoss, looking for compositions that bring together the mountain, waterfalls and surrounding landscape.

If the sky clears and aurora activity is favourable, we may head out again after dark for our first chance to photograph the Northern Lights.

Overnight stay: Grundarfjörður area.

Day 2 — Kirkjufell Sunrise, Þingvellir & Brúarfoss

We return to Kirkjufell for sunrise, giving us a second opportunity to photograph the mountain in different light. Conditions can change quickly here, and even a familiar composition can take on a completely different character from one morning to the next.

After breakfast, we leave Snæfellsnes and make our way towards Þingvellir National Park, a landscape shaped by volcanic activity and the movement of tectonic plates. Our main stop is Öxarárfoss, where water falls over dark rock formations within the rift valley.

Later, we visit Brúarfoss, a smaller waterfall known for the striking blue colour of its glacial water. The flowing channels and natural rock formations make it particularly rewarding for experimenting with shutter speeds and more intimate compositions.

We finish the day in the Golden Circle area, with the possibility of an evening aurora session if conditions allow.

Overnight stay: Golden Circle area.

Day 3 — Gullfoss Sunrise & South Coast Waterfalls

Our first stop is Gullfoss, one of Iceland’s most powerful waterfalls. We aim to photograph it in the early morning, when the lower sun and changing mist can create interesting light across the canyon.

After breakfast, we travel towards the South Coast to explore Skógafoss and Kvernufoss. Although close to one another, these waterfalls offer very different photographic possibilities. Skógafoss is known for its broad curtain of water and impressive scale, while Kvernufoss sits within a sheltered gorge, where the surrounding cliffs add depth to the scene.

We’ll spend time working with different viewpoints and shutter speeds rather than simply stopping for a quick photograph.

Our final session is planned at Dyrhólaey, overlooking the black sand coastline near Vík. The cliffs, sea stacks and long stretches of beach provide plenty of possibilities for coastal landscape photography as the afternoon light fades.

An evening Northern Lights outing may be possible, depending on the sky and aurora forecast.

Overnight stay: Vík area.

Day 4 — Reynisfjara Sunrise, Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon & Glacial Landscapes

We start the morning at Reynisfjara, the black sand beach near Vík. The Reynisdrangar sea stacks, basalt columns and Atlantic surf offer a strong combination of shapes, textures and movement. We’ll concentrate on finding compositions from safe positions, keeping well clear of the unpredictable waves.

After breakfast, we continue east to Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon. From its designated viewpoints, the winding canyon and river below create natural leading lines through the landscape. It’s a location that works particularly well for both wide-angle views and tighter compositions.

The journey then takes us across the lava fields and glacial plains of southern Iceland towards Skaftafell, within Vatnajökull National Park.

If access conditions permit, our afternoon photography session will focus on Svínafellsjökull, an outlet glacier with striking ice formations and a rugged mountain backdrop. From safe viewpoints, we’ll look for patterns, layers and details within the glacial landscape.

Overnight stay: Skaftafell area.

Day 5 — Optional Aerial Photography & Eystrahorn Sunset

After several early starts, we’ve deliberately left this morning free of a scheduled sunrise session.

Participants interested in aerial photography can choose to join an optional flight from Skaftafell Airport, subject to weather and availability. Seen from above, the braided glacial rivers of Skeiðarársandur form an intricate network of channels, sediment patterns and contrasting colours. It’s a very different way of photographing Iceland’s landscape, with opportunities for abstract compositions that are difficult to appreciate from ground level.

The flight is operated in a small aircraft with windows that can be opened for photography. It is not included in the tour price.

Later, we continue east towards Höfn, with time to appreciate the changing scenery along the coast.

For sunset, we plan to photograph Eystrahorn, near Hvalnes. Its steep mountain slopes, dark shoreline and coastal foregrounds make it a compelling location, particularly when the last light reaches the peaks.

If conditions are suitable, we may also look for the Northern Lights after dark.

Overnight stay: Höfn area.

Day 6 — Vestrahorn: Sunrise, Sunset & Northern Lights

Today we dedicate our photography sessions to Vestrahorn and Stokksnes, without the pressure of a long drive or another hotel change.

We begin at sunrise, exploring the black sand beach and the distinctive mountain peaks rising above the coast. Depending on the tide and weather, shallow pools may provide reflections, while the dunes and windswept grasses offer foregrounds for more layered compositions.

Rather than moving quickly between locations, we’ll have time to explore the area properly. We’ll work with different focal lengths, observe how the light changes across the mountains and look for both wide landscapes and smaller details.

In the afternoon, we return for another session, choosing our positions according to the conditions and the direction of the light.

Should the skies clear and aurora activity be favourable, Vestrahorn may also provide the setting for a Northern Lights photography session. Its mountain silhouette and open coastline make it a particularly appealing location for night photography.

Overnight stay: Höfn area.

Day 7 — Múlagljúfur Canyon & Jökulsárlón Sunset

Leaving Höfn, we travel west towards the glacial landscapes of southeastern Iceland.

Weather and trail conditions permitting, our main activity is a hike to Múlagljúfur Canyon. The route climbs towards viewpoints overlooking a deep valley, steep cliffs and waterfalls. The scale of the landscape makes this an especially rewarding place for landscape photography, with opportunities to use the canyon’s natural lines and surrounding mountains in our compositions.

The hike requires a reasonable level of fitness, and we will only attempt it if conditions are safe. If the trail is unsuitable, we will adapt the day and spend more time exploring accessible glacial landscapes in the area.

Later, we continue to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, where icebergs break away from Breiðamerkurjökull and drift across the water towards the sea.

We plan to photograph the lagoon around sunset, working with reflections, floating ice and the changing colours of the sky. Every visit is different, as the icebergs constantly shift in position, shape and appearance.

If the weather cooperates, there may also be an opportunity for aurora photography over the lagoon.

Overnight stay: Jökulsárlón / Öræfi area.

Day 8 — Diamond Beach Sunrise & Iceland’s Glacial Landscapes

We return to the coast at sunrise to photograph Diamond Beach, where pieces of glacial ice are washed onto the black volcanic sand.

The combination of translucent ice, dark sand and moving water makes this one of Iceland’s most interesting locations for creative photography. We’ll look for individual ice formations, experiment with shutter speeds and work with the changing relationship between the waves and the ice.

After breakfast, we begin our journey west along the South Coast.

Depending on the weather and available time, we may stop at viewpoints overlooking the outlet glaciers of Vatnajökull, or visit Fjallsárlón, a quieter glacial lagoon surrounded by mountains.

The drive takes us through broad glacial plains, lava fields and volcanic scenery. We’ll keep the schedule flexible enough for occasional photography stops when the conditions are worth exploring.

By late afternoon, we reach the Hvolsvöllur area, where we can settle in for a quieter evening. A Northern Lights outing remains possible if the forecast is promising.

Overnight stay: Hvolsvöllur area.

Day 9 — South Coast Waterfalls & Reykjanes Sunset

Our final full day begins with Gluggafoss, also known as Merkjárfoss. Unlike the larger waterfalls we’ve visited, Gluggafoss is particularly interesting for the way water passes through openings and channels in the rock. Its unusual structure offers opportunities for studying shapes, textures and flowing water.

We then continue to Seljalandsfoss, where the waterfall drops from a high cliff into the plain below. We’ll explore suitable viewpoints and, if access conditions allow, visit nearby Gljúfrabúi, a smaller waterfall partly hidden inside a narrow gorge.

After a lunch stop around Hveragerði, we head towards the Reykjanes Peninsula for our final planned sunset session.

At Valahnúkamöl, the Atlantic Ocean meets a rugged coastline of volcanic cliffs and offshore rock formations. We’ll look for compositions using the coastline, waves and sea stacks, making the most of the available evening light. The visit will depend on weather and local access restrictions.

After sunset, we continue to our accommodation near Keflavík International Airport, bringing our final full day of photography to a close.

Overnight stay: Keflavík area.

Day 10 — Departure from Iceland

Our Iceland photography tour concludes after breakfast.

There are no scheduled photography sessions today, allowing participants to depart according to their individual flight arrangements. An airport shuttle may be available through the accommodation, subject to its operating schedule and availability.

After nine days exploring Iceland’s mountains, waterfalls, glaciers and coastline, we head home with new photographs, shared experiences and a deeper appreciation of the country’s constantly changing landscapes.

End of the photography tour.
